Colonel Edmund W. Starling of the Secret Service. (Library of Congress.)

The U.S. Secret Service protected President Coolidge and his wife Grace throughout their summer in the Black Hills. Colonel Edmund William Starling was with the president whenever he traveled and even helped to bait his hook when the president went fishing. Starling began protecting presidents in 1914. During a thirty-year career in the White House, he was responsible for the safety of five presidents of the United States.
